about superfluous?

superfluous Grace - the obsolete use of the word superfluous means ”exceeding what is sufficient.”  God could have merely ”saved” us, but instead He lavishes on us His Grace. We all are the prodigal son(s). We are the ones that in high-handed rebellion squandered our inheritance, and like the father in the story, our heavenly Father takes us back, puts a robe (the righteousness of Christ) on us, and throws us a feast.  These are thoughts from my daily look into the God’s word.  Over the course of a year or so I had been sharing them with my students (M-F). I am not a blogger but my son finally convinced me that I should post them on a blog – so here it is. While I hold advanced degrees in theology, these short studies will not be technical in nature. In fact I believe it was Irenaeus who made it his mandate ”not to invent new doctrine,” of which I believe is good advice for me to follow.  However, it is my prayer that they will drive you to drink deeper from God’s revelation.  You will notice that I am unapologetically a Calvinist. Having said that let me point out that either the Westminster Shorter or the Heidelberg Catechism is at the end  of each day so you have no excuse not to learn them – it will serve you well. There are many blogs that discuss (or argue) issues facing the church and culture. There is nothing wrong with such sites and it is not that I do not find them important or needed. My point here is the Word and the communication of God’s grace.  I want to add this disclaimer as well – While I warmly welcome your comments, I will not enter into theological debate on this forum so don’t bother. Scripture quotes will most often be in the ESV.

Grace and Peace
